The Small Pack
Your small pack, or haversack, is carried with you into battle. you would only carry what you would immediately need in a combat scenario. You are expected to carry a dry pair of socks, your dry rations bag, your cup, your mess tins(which are often carried on the outside), and your knife, fork, and spoon. Along with this, men would often carry canned rations, such as corned beef or Maconochie meat and vegetable stew, as well as a small stove, or tommy cooker, and a tin of tea. This would be enough to survive in the trenches and in combat.

The PH Hood
The PH hood was first issued in late 1915 as a replacement to the hypo hood. the hood used a small filter contained within the mouth piece that would filter the gas. The hood itself was made of a flannel material similar to that of the undershirt. As such, if the hood became wet the fabric would open up and allow the gas to seep inside, so the hoods were often kept in make shift rubberized canvas cases made from spare groundsheets inside the cloth carrying bag.

Small Box Respirator
The small box respirator(SBR) was issued first in late 1916, and fully replaced the PH hood in February of 1917. The SBR used a small asbestos filter contained within the carrying bag to filter the gas. This was connected via a rubber hose to the face mask which was made of a waterproof canvas similar to the ground sheet. The mask did not fully seal to the face, so it was necessary for one to have the mouthpiece in their mouth at all times during a gas attack. The SBR was worn at the ready when soldiers were at the front, where their masks would sit on their chests above the webbing belt.
